What is Lent?
Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent in the Christian Church. The forty days of this season, not counting Sundays, begins with the imposition of ashes on the foreheads of the faithful. It may seem odd to us, but ashes are placed on the forehead of each worshipper as part of the act of confession and as a sign of mortality and penitence.
The period of forty days is not random. Forty is often the number of testing and transformation. It rained for forty days and nights as Noah rode out the storm on the ark. The Hebrew people wandered in the wilderness for forty years on their journey to the Promised Land. Jesus was tested in the wilderness for forty days and forty nights as he prepared for his ministry. It only makes sense that we follow the lead of Jesus and prepare for 40 days for the celebration of Easter! The greatest day in our belief!
Who is Jesus? What did Jesus stand for? Well, this Lenten season, we are going to define that, using Jesus’s own words. Jesus gave us a very clear picture of who he was and what he stood for as he walked this earth, and we will be digging into what Jesus said – both in our Sunday morning message and a Tuesday evening Bible study – lead by Nancy Butler. Join us each week of Lent, on Team Jesus, as we discuss who Jesus said he was.
Lenten topics:
I AM – the Light of the World
I AM – the Bread of Life
I AM – the Gate of the Sheep
I AM – the Good Shepherd
I AM – the True Vine
I AM – the Way, The Truth, and the Life (Palm Sunday)
I AM – the Resurrection and the Life (Easter)
Join us for one, join us for all as you prepare your heart for the Resurrection of Jesus.
